About yearbook2006

The mission of Project Y06 is to document and preserve the legacy of the graduating class of Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans.

Through an interactive website, Y06 seeks to give a cohesive and layered forum to the fractured voices of those seniors who were displaced and those who remained in New Orleans, aiming to, above all, nurture and heal the vibrant social fabric that Katrina threatened to destroy.

Senior year at any high school across this country is a major transitional period; a period in which students reaffirm their community ties while, at the same time, they prepare to separate from that community. Hurricane Katrina prematurely forced this transition and moment of separation on thousands of seniors throughout New Orleans.

Y06 allows the students themselves to acknowledge exile while transcending it as they explore these transitions online together, while giving the rest of us a unique way of understanding the personal impact of the New Orleans disaster. But more than personalizing the devastation wrought by the storm, the most important mission of Y06 is to offer a forum for preserving and fortifying a community – a community that needs nurturing now more than ever.
